Residential Program is available on UMHC's campus for males and females, ages 12 through 20, who are referred by county children and youth agencies and family courts, or who are unable to live with their families or within foster care placements. The youth may be: dependent, neglected, and/or abused; status offenders; emotionally disturbed; and pre-delinquent or delinquent. Residential care is provided in living units that house 6-10 youths staffed by dedicated childcare workers who provide round-the-clock guidance, structure, nurturance, and discipline to the youth on campus. Care starts with admission, when a team of UMHC professionals meet with the resident, parents, and county caseworkers or probation officers to develop an Individual Service Plan with projected length of placement, specific goals, and visitation plans.

The program utilizes behavior modification, reality therapy, and cognitive behavioral techniques as the basic therapeutic approaches. Regular evaluations are provided to parents and county agencies. Youth who are in need of drug and alcohol rehabilitation services or more comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic assessment, or treatment are referred to the appropriate behavior healthcare providers
Room and board and some basic services are paid by contracts with Children, Youth and Family Services from various counties in central and southern Pennsylvania. Those contracts typically do not cover the cost of specialized care that most of our kids need to come to terms with the trauma that brought them to the Home. Many just want to go home; however, that is often not possible.
Residents attend public school in the West Shore School District. Those who need it, attend learning and emotional support programs provided within the District. Staff encourages youth to earn a place on the honor role, and participate in school activities as well as athletic and extracurricular events. The kids also have opportunities to attend community events, exercise, and take part in recreational programs to enhance their physical and emotional growth.
